Geriatrics is a specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions of infectious, degenerative, tumor, inflammatory, and allergic causes. , autoimmune and even those of unknown etiology that affect people over 65 years of age, as well as their complications. Geriatrics is a clinical specialty of hospital practice that offers older adult patients comprehensive care for their health problems. In this sense, geriatrics specialists have expertise in clinical examination techniques, in the indication and interpretation of auxiliary studies to support diagnosis, in carrying out diagnostic and treatment procedures; and decide promptly the situations of surgical, emergency, and palliation requirements, as well as the relevance of their transfer to intermediate or intensive care units. Its field of action is centralized in the hospitalization areas of the Hospital Universitario Mayor and the Hospital de Barrios Unidos; Its care management is also developed through the development of skills in addressing the conditions that alter the health condition of the elderly, applying health education tools aimed at detecting and overcoming risk, in the understanding and use of policies aimed at protecting an age group that demands, above all, quality of life.
