Description
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common conditions that appear as a result in the increase of life expectancy, being the leading cause of death worldwide, it is estimated that 523 million people live with one or more of these illnesses. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number of persons
aged 80 years or older is expected to triple between 2020 and 2050 reaching 426 million. Open heart surgery has demonstrated to improve the quality of life, life expectancy and long-term survival, being a relevant intervention due to its impact in elderly patients’ survival. It has been shown that these patients clinical characteristics are associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications. In Colombia, there is scarce data published that estimate the prevalence of surgical complications in a cohort of octogenarian patients and its associations with common risk factors.

Objective
The aim of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients aged 80 years or more who underwent cardiac surgery between 2019 to 2022 in a high complexity hospital in Bogota, Colombia
Key findings
It will be expected have information on mortality and complications in surgical procedures in the local population that will contribute to knowledge about the approach to patients over 80 years of age.
