Clinical and Demographic Characteristics and Knowledge of Patients Presenting with a First Diagnosis of Acute Myocardial Infarction at a High-Complexity Hospital in Bogotá, Colombia

Project Details

Description

Cardiovascular diseases, particularly acute myocardial infarction, represent a significant burden on public health in Colombia and worldwide. According to available data, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Colombia, aligning with the global trend. This underscores the need to address these diseases from multiple perspectives, such as modifiable risk factors like physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking, and non-adherence to pharmacological therapies and lifestyle changes. Adherence to medical recommendations has been observed to be crucial for the prevention of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and the reduction of associated costs.

Objective

To determine the clinical and demographic characteristics, as well as the knowledge of patients experiencing their first acute myocardial infarction upon admission to the Universidad Mayor Méderi Hospital in Bogotá, Colombia.

Key findings

The objective is to clinically and sociodemographically characterize patients admitted to Méderi with a first-time diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and to assess their knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors, the disease process, its clinical course, and prognosis. This will include a detailed description of the anatomical and clinical presentation of these first-time infarction cases, as well as an evaluation of how patients’ existing cardiovascular risk profiles relate to their understanding of the disease.
