Project Details
Description
Infectious endocarditis (IE) is an inflammatory disease of the endocardial tissue, primarily caused by bacteria, certain fungal species, and other infectious agents. Risk factors for developing IE include congenital or acquired cardiac anatomical abnormalities, degenerative heart diseases, invasive cardiac procedures, the use of intracardiac devices, prosthetic valves, hemodialysis catheters, medication administration catheters, and intravenous drug use.
In Latin America, two primary infectious endocarditis registries exist: the RE-ENDO registry from the Instituto de Cardiología do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, which includes all patients with any type of IE treated at the institution and focuses on determining morbidity and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality 1 to 4 years after treatment; and the EIRA-3 registry, a prospective multicentre registry conducted in Argentina between 2014 and 2016, aimed at analysing the epidemiology, clinical and microbiological characteristics, and in-hospital mortality of IE.
In Colombia, studies have characterised the clinical and epidemiological aspects of IE, including patients treated at various healthcare institutions and those reported in the Integrated Social Protection Information System (SISPRO). However, there are no national registries of infectious endocarditis reported in the literature.

Objective
To implement a registry of patients diagnosed with infectious endocarditis treated at the Hospital Universitario Mayor-Méderi.
Key findings
The Red Hospitalaria Méderi proposes establishing a registry of infectious endocarditis patients treated since 2009 to foster knowledge generation, understand the epidemiology, clinical and microbiological characteristics, and assess treatment outcomes for this condition.
