Performance of the Alvarado Score for the Diagnosis of Appendicitis in Patients Over 80 Years Old at Méderi

Project Details

Description

Acute appendicitis remains one of the leading causes of abdominal pain in the world it is estimated that approximately 15% of patients with acute appendicitis are patients older than 65 years, and given the demographic changes this population is constantly increasing due to the particular conditions of this population, the classic clinical presentation changes, which often results in delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Methodology: A diagnostic test study in which 742 patients over 80 years of age who have consulted the general surgery service of the Méderi hospital between 2019-2024 with abdominal pain suspected of acute appendicitis and in whom the calculation of the diagnostic scale has been made will be evaluated.

Objective

To evaluate the diagnostic performance (sensitivity, specificity and predictive values) of the Alvarado scale in patients over 80 years of age with suspected diagnosis of appendicitis in Méderi between 2019 - 2024.

Key findings

We expect to obtain differences in the sensitivity and specificity values of the Alvarado scale in those
over 80 years of age with respect to those estimated for the general population, as well as changes in the distribution
of patients in terms of low, intermediate and high risk.
