Project Details

Description

Life expectancy worldwide has increased thanks to advances in medicine, meaning that ever more older adults require major surgical procedures. In this population, one of the principal concerns when considering such interventions is the quality of life they will experience after surgery. Consequently, it is vitally important to assess postoperative quality-of-life outcomes in patients undergoing head and neck resections that necessitate microvascular reconstruction.

Objective

To describe the postoperative quality of life of patients aged 65 years and over who underwent major head and neck surgery with microvascular reconstruction at Hospital Universitario Mayor Méderi in Bogotá, Colombia.

Key findings

Among the outcomes, it is expected that in the immediate postoperative period the vast majority of patients will not fully recover swallowing or speech. However, it is anticipated that these functions will be regained in the ensuing postoperative months.
