Registro integral de la atención de los pacientes con cáncer gástrico y esofágico.

Project Details

Description

The Comprehensive Registry of Gastroesophageal Cancer Care aims to address the lack of robust data in low- and middle-income countries by focusing on hospital-based cancer registries (HCRs). Unlike population-based cancer registries (PCRs), which provide epidemiological insights such as incidence and prevalence, HCRs collect detailed clinical and administrative data, essential for characterising patient populations, monitoring adherence to clinical guidelines, and improving care quality. HCRs are particularly valuable in regions without PCRs, offering insights into clinical staging, survival rates, and treatment outcomes.

At Red Hospitalaria Méderi, 521 patients with gastric or oesophageal cancer were treated in 2021, with 72% of consultations occurring at the Hospital Universitario Mayor-Méderi. The average patient age was 67 years, and 58.7% were male. That year, 93 gastrectomies and 14 oesophagectomies were performed, reflecting the institution's significant caseload. Previous observational data from 334 gastric cancer patients (2011–2017) highlighted the potential of HCRs for generating valuable clinical insights. However, challenges such as methodological quality and underutilised databases underscore the need to establish reliable HCRs as a foundation for research, clinical improvement, and public health policy.

Objective

To implement an institutional registry of patients diagnosed with gastric and oesophageal cancer treated within the Méderi network starting from January 1, 2014.

Key findings

We therefore consider it imperative to establish a gastric and oesophageal HCR at Méderi to improve the quality of care from both clinical and administrative perspectives. This would enable the development of a monitoring system that facilitates the consolidation and integration of national and international information networks.
