Project Details
Description
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a condition characterised by the obstruction of blood flow in a pulmonary artery, typically caused by a thrombus originating from the venous system of the lower limbs. It is a common yet often fatal complication of venous thromboembolism and is associated with multiple risk factors, both inherent (Factor V Leiden, prothrombin gene mutation, antithrombin deficiency, protein C and S deficiencies) and acquired (trauma, surgery, malignancy, peripartum period, oestrogen therapy, ageing, obesity). Although thrombi often resolve, certain groups of patients develop chronic residual thrombosis, contributing to post-PE syndrome.
Objective
To implement a registry of patients with acute thrombotic pulmonary embolism treated at the Hospital Universitario Mayor – Méderi.
Key findings
The registry aims to clearly and accurately identify the local population affected by this condition and their clinical characteristics, which may influence disease progression and health outcomes. It is expected to promote the design and development of clinical studies addressing the needs and challenges of patients with thrombotic PE treated at Méderi.
