Description

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures represent a growing public health concern due to their high morbidity and mortality in an aging—and increasingly long-lived—population. This demographic transition is underscored by the World Health Organization’s life‐expectancy estimates for Colombia: 77.5 years overall, 80 years for women, and 74 years for men. As life expectancy rises, noncommunicable chronic diseases such as osteoporosis are becoming more prevalent at the local, regional, and global levels.
Osteoporosis is considered a public health problem because it disproportionately affects postmenopausal women and older adults, increasing both fracture risk and incidence and imposing substantial social and economic burdens on health systems

Objective

To implement the registry of patients with vertebral and/or hip fragility fractures treated at Hospital Universitario Mayor-Méderi.

Key findings

Implementing the aforementioned fragility-fracture registry at Méderi will not only strengthen clinical research initiatives but also generate administrative and management metrics to enhance our understanding of vertebral and hip fragility–fracture care within the institution. This, in turn, will facilitate new investigations in the field and enrich process-related indicators.
