Abstract

Introduction: the population of patients receiv-ing home parenteral nutrition (HPN) worldwide is increasing and present significant challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. The objective of the review was to identify and report the available evidence on the use of home par-enteral nutrition, exploring the logistical needs for health care teams, clinical strategies based on nutritional objectives, prevention and man-agement of complications, and the impact on quality of life of patients and associated costs.Method: exploratory review of systematic re-views, meta-analyses and clinical practice guidelines focused on the management of adult patients with indication for parenteral nutrition (mixed or exclusive), excluding those requiring bypass surgery or those who are pregnant. Pub-lications identified in the Cochrane, MEDLINE, LILACS and EMBASE databases were included, from 2018 to 2023 and without language restric-tion.Results: 15 articles were analyzed, 12 focused mainly on health outcomes, 2 on the logistical needs for care and 1 on costs associated with DPN. In relation to the type of publication, 7 sys-tematic literature reviews, 5 meta-analyses and 3 clinical practice guidelines were identified. Conclusions: We identified clinical recom-mendations on HPN. More research is required focused on the evaluation of quality of life, lo-gistical requirements and cost evaluation, sup-ported by a structured homecare program.
